Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
The focus of the position will be to plan, organize, coordinate and direct the maintenance of the plant in general under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager. This position is responsible for a variety of functional specialties with overlapping work areas of U2 plants, through Lead Hands and contractor’s Managers and Superintendents at the Horizon Oil Sands Site.  In this role, it is vital that the individual is able to make dynamic decisions assessing short and long term impacts while balancing operational needs with maintaining the assets.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• The Mechanical Superintendent will demonstrate leadership for the maintenance department by ensuring safe work, establishing high standards and optimizing productivity. 
• The position is supported by Lead hand, contractor Manager and Superintendent with their front line supervisors and maintenance personnel.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plan, manage and evaluate staff performance;
• Monitor performance and provide coaching for performance improvement and development;
• Subject to management concurrence, take disciplinary action to address performance deficiencies in accordance with company policies.
• Member of the plant leadership team: develop and implement strategies to identify, prioritize, and implement proactive maintenance and asset reliability improvement processes and projects.
• Develop and supervise the maintenance team, including any contract resources brought on site in support of our facility.
• Provide plant wide leadership in the application of based maintenance programs.
• Responsible for the plants maintenance budget and for using maintenance and reliability principles to improve maintenance costs and productivity.
• Utilize leadership and expertise in the principles of Root Cause Analysis and Reliability Centered Maintenance to create an environment of continuous asset reliability improvement.
• Responsible for working with maintenance staff and site contractors to ensure a safe work environment based upon behavioral based safety principles.
• Participate as a key driver and influencer for the development of maintenance staff in the area of equipment ownership, maintenance and care through proper employee training and development.
• Determine time, equipment, material and personnel requirements for the maintenance jobs.
• Select the members of the maintenance team
• Ensure the team is properly resourced, equipped, safety inducted and introduced to plant personnel
• Set out the team’s targets as planned
• Attend nominated operation/maintenance meetings
• Resolve strategic issues for Lead Hands
• Delegate authority to Lead Hands in some specific tasks
• Monitor team performance via the Lead Hands
• Report directly to the Maintenance Manager
• Refer maintenance issues to the management team and assist the team to resolve them.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• A mechanical engineering degree or its equivalent,
• The ideal candidate will have 10 years maintenance experience in Oil Sands
• 3 to 5 years  senior supervisory experience

Personal Qualities:
• Highly motivated; energetic team player who enjoys a fast-paced work environment
• Proficient in Microsoft applications, familiar in the use of computer systems to control, procure, track work orders
• Excellent written and oral communication skills to be able to influence others with excellent communication in both written and oral form
• Strong leadership, mentoring and team building skills
• Exceptional problem solving skills allow you to consider the details and complexities of issues while still driving for results
• A diverse knowledge gained through hands-on experience, understanding how to employ common-sense effectively and fit-for-purpose approach to work.

• Comply with all Health and Safety Requirements established by Canadian Natural Resources Limited
• Know and comply with all regulations and legislative requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for the Province of Alberta and environmental standards
• Follow safe work procedures and ensure all personnel comply;
• Report any injury or illness immediately;
• Report unsafe acts and conditions;
• Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and is worn where and when required.
