Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
This position provides the individual with the opportunity to ensure the success of the Ore Preparation and Extraction plants, as well as the Froth Treatment plant, in Bitumen Production.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Monitor plant performance with operations and maintenance support
• Use scientific methods to determine the root cause of problems and support activities to develop solutions
• Support all activities to reduce the water inventory in the Oil Sand Tailings pond and develop solutions for optimal deposition in the pond.

In this role you will be exposed to a diverse operating environment including the following processes:
  Ore Preparation – Dry (Crushing)
  Ore Preparation – Wet (mix hot water and ore product slurry)
  Extraction – Flotation (primary separation process)
  Tailings processes (high heat chemical extraction)
  Piping corridors (flow rates/volumes)
  De-bottlenecking activities optimizing process production
  Involvement with commissioning, start-up and shutdowns
  Managing projects and project budgets

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide technical support to Operations and Maintenance
• Monitor and support tailings pond deposition plans and future pilot work
• Support the operator training simulator
• Support De-bottlenecking activities and monitor plant performance and rapidly trouble shoot any problems
• Support regulatory and environmental samplings and reporting
• Identify, screen and develop proposals to improve plant recovery, reliability, and safety
• Support and participate in major sustaining and capital projects
• Perform reconciled mass balance and S23 reports
• Develop test programs in the different areas of the plant
• Contribute with the Management of Change process
• Review and suggest new control loops to improve a steady operation
• Monitor chemical consumption. Touch base with chemical suppliers to improve performance
• Monitor slurry lines behavior to avoid sanding and minimize wear
• Experience with PI, AFT Fathom, Bilmat is preferred

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• Chemical Engineering degree or Mineral Processing Engineering degree preferred (Eligible for Registration as a Professional engineer in Alberta is required)
• 3 years of direct Oil Sand experience or 5-10 years as a Process Engineer in a mineral processing plant, mining or related industry
• Oil Sands experience (or similar experience in other industry) in any of the following processes an asset:
  Ore Preparation – Dry (Crushing)
  Ore Preparation – Wet (mix hot water and ore product slurry)
  Extraction – Flotation (primary separation process)
  Tailings processes (high heat chemical extraction)
  Piping corridors (flow rates/volumes)
• Plant engineering and operating experience, with a focus on de-bottlenecking activities
• Exposure to optimizing process ore preparation and extraction processes in an oil sands operating environment
• Experience or exposure to overseeing projects and projects budgets along with optimizing plant performance test an asset
• Experience with PI, AFT Fathom and Ideas Simulation an asset
• Working experience with slurry lines hydraulics calculation, Mass Balance calculations and of issues related to corrosion is an asset
