Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
Our Process Engineer will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience to ensure the success of the Froth Treatment plant.

In this role you will be exposed to a diverse operating environment including the following processes:
• Froth Feed and IPS (Inclined Plate Settlers)
• Naphtha Recovery Unit (NRU) & Vapour Recovery Unit (VRU)
• Cyclones (separation process)
• De-bottlenecking activities optimizing process production
• Involvement with start-up and shutdowns
• Contribute to the Management of Change process

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
The Process Engineer – Froth Treatment will provide support within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment for the successful continuous operation of the Froth Treatment Plant.
Provide technical support to the Operations and Maintenance teams through:
     •  Heat and Material Balances
     •  Design Criteria
     •  Process Flow Diagrams
     •  Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Support the development of the operating procedures and operator training manuals.
• Participate in Hazard and Operability reviews
• Monitor and support Dilbit quality and tailings quality
• Support the operator training simulator
• Support De-bottlenecking activities and monitor plant performance and rapidly trouble shoot any problems
• Develop test programs in the different areas of the plant
• Monitor and suggest new control loops to improve operations
• Monitor chemical consumption and interact with chemical suppliers to improve plant performance
• Support regulatory and environmental samplings and reporting
• Identify, screen and develop proposals to improve plant recovery, reliability, and safety
• Support and participate in major sustaining and capital projects

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• As our ideal candidate, you have 10+ years as a Process Engineer in the field of Froth Treatment, ideally within an oil sands environment. 
• An engineering degree in Chemical, Mineral Processing or Mining Engineering is preferred
• Eligibile for registration as a Professional engineer in Alberta is required
• Plant engineering and operating experience, with a focus on de-bottlenecking activities
• Exposure to optimizing process ore preparation and extraction processes in an oil sands operating environment
• Experience with computer systems - PI, Hysys and ProII an asset
• Working experience with slurry lines hydraulics calculation, Mass Balance calculations and of issues related to corrosion is an asset

• Exceptional problem solving skills allow you to consider the details and complexities of issues, while still driving for results.  
• You are highly motivated, self managed and get things done right the first time. 
• Your diverse knowledge of froth treatment has been gained through hands-on experience and provides you with the understanding to employ a common sense, fit-for-purpose approach to your work.
