Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
Horizon Oil Sands is seeking a Process Engineer for the Support Units {Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU), Sour Water Stripper (SWS) and Amine} in the Primary Upgrader area to provide technical expertise in supporting operations and maintenance or the successful venture of Phase I Horizon. The key focus for this role is to foresee, predict and recommend solutions in the assigned processing area - optimizing plant operation is priority.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Fully utilize your solid background in process engineering working with the Primary Upgrading Process Engineering and Operation’s teams. 
• Continuously use your technical expertise and practical experience to troubleshoot, improve efficiencies and advise others.
• Utilize your strong analytical mind set to predict, identify and resolve processing issues.
• Provide support for the development of phases II/III within a cross-functional team of seasoned professionals from all over the world.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide engineering support for routine daily and long term monitoring, process design and economic benefit analysis for the SRU, SWS and Amine Units. The support requires collaboration and interpersonal skills necessary to work with operations, maintenance, and technical groups.
• Analyze and remedy shortfalls of performance compared with targets. Conduct test runs to optimize process variables and evaluate plant performance.
• Provide guidance to operations consistent with environmental and operational requirements and assist in safety, environmental and quality audits.
• Troubleshoot plant and process control problems to ensure reliable, safe, and productive operation by identifying the root cause, recommending/implementing technical solutions, and auditing follow-up.
• In cooperation with the Applications Engineers, develop, implement, and improve advanced process controls to more effectively optimize plant operation by running tighter to equipment and process specifications.
• Play key role during plant and unit turnarounds by reviewing scopes, inspecting equipment, and providing technical support as needed for T/A success.
• Front end engineering design for improvement projects for strategic and business improvement.
• Identify areas to improve plant safety, environmental, reliability and production and develop key performance monitoring variables for the assigned units.
• Support the review and update of operating procedures and provide support as required to the project team developing the phase II/III units in the Upgrading units.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• A minimum of two to four years experience in a process engineer role for Sulphur Recovery Units (Claus and SCOT), Gas Sweetening Units using Amines and Sour Water Strippers is necessary.
• A degree in Chemical Engineering is preferred and registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in Alberta is required.
• Skilled in the use of processing engineering tools such HYSYS and heat exchanger sizing programs.
