Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
• Horizon Oil Sands is a world class integrated oil sands mine and upgrading project achieving first synthetic crude oil production in 2009.
• As a young operation, Horizon provides an atmosphere of tremendous future potential where talented mine planners will thrive.
• This is a senior level mine planning position tasked with providing technical leadership to the mine.
• Reporting to the Lead Engineer, Long Range Planning, this position will ensure optimized Long Range Mine Plans are provided and communicated in a timely fashion.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Contribute your experience and expertise, in addition to new and innovative ideas, to improve and advance the Horizon Oil Sands mine.
• Take an active role in the development of annual mine planning as well as the life plans of the mine.
• Monitor stewardship to the long range mine plan.
• Collaborate with the Mine Operations team to ensure plan optimization
• Ensure the Horizon Oil Sands mining operation is working in compliance with regulatory requirements
• Mentor and develop junior mining engineers

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintenance, operation and upkeep of the Horizon mine scheduling and costing models
• Project management
• Preparation of reserve/resource statements
• Preparation of various regulatory submissions
• Provide a framework for mine continuous improvement
• Budget preparation
• Equipment specification and selection
• Reliability and efficiency modeling
• Mine equipment productivity analysis

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• Degree in Mine Engineering (or possibly civil engineering with a mining background)
• 5+ years of experience as a Mine Planning Engineer - preference will be given to those candidates with  experience working in an open-pit mining environment
• Eligible for registration with APEGGA
• A proven track record of creating successful mine plans (both short and long term)
• Experience working with Mintec Minesight or a similar Mining software package
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
