Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
• Reporting to the Production Planning Manager, the Production Planning Engineer is responsible for the production and operational planning of short range activities (less than 1 year).
• The Production Planning Engineer is a key player in planning, coordinating and forecasting daily, weekly and monthly production.  The Production Planning Engineer will lead daily operational meetings and will be a lead participant in the Production Planning Committee meetings.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
The Production Planning Engineer will:
• Coordinate the daily production meeting
• Prepare and analyze daily SCO blend
• Prepare the production plans
• Coordinate, investigate and explain production variances
• Consolidate area production plans
• Report and explain production performance vs. plan.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Create, update and maintain a tactical (short term) operational production plan
• Prepare and optimize daily SCO blend according to SCO specs
• Prepare the quality analysis and complete the analysis of the SCO lab results
• Lead daily coordination meeting
• Receive, validate and consolidate area production data and integrate it into the short term plan
• Support the production reporting models, processes, systems and train users
• Review, investigate and explain variances in production vs. plan
• Own and develop production reports to meet management needs (variance report and 3 month plan)
• Prepare operational directives (daily or as required)
• Participate in the Operational and production planning committee meetings
• Provide information to support production planning processes
• Work with area process engineers to de-bottleneck production
• General consolidation of production results, reviews and technical explanations
• Work with all area production representatives, marketing and production planning committee members to assemble the weekly plans and ensure that site capabilities are understood
• Support operations on unplanned shutdowns (verify recovery time, simulate recovery plans, assess opportunities for maintenance windows, looks for optimization of production opportunities)
• Lead and prepare the supportive documentation required to support the sequence and integration of the operations during start up, ramp down, outages etc.
 
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• Bachelors degree in Engineering, Geosciences or equivalent
• Proficient in the use of technical software such as Hysis is desirable
• Able to respond to urgency situations quickly and be on call as required
• Knowledgeable and experienced in Oil Sands/bitumen reporting processes.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is essential

• Able to work over time as required and/or availability for on-call work as required

• Leadership skills a strong asset
