Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
With extensive experience troubleshooting electrical issues, this position plays a key role in the maintainability of the Horizon Oil Sands facility. Viewed as an integral part of this operation, your skills and expertise will be utilized to ensure all parties are supported through open communication and guidance.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
Reporting to the Electrical Lead this role will maintain open communication while supporting various groups within specific business areas (Maintenance, Operations and Project Services).
•The Electrical Engineer will participate actively in the areas of trouble shooting, operational support, creating/improving efficiencies, maximizing uptime and contributing to the sustainability to the facility.
•Extensive hands on, operational experience will place you in the “go to” role for any issues/information exchanges which will ultimately be communicated to the E/I Manager.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Operational Responsibilities:
•Support Maintenance and Operations; providing guidance and recommendations during commissioning and start-up, ongoing routine operations, plant outages and turnarounds.
•Generation of work scopes for maintenance, repairs and modification of plant equipment.
•Ensure maintenance and reliability requirements have been addressed for repairs, plant changes and major equipment purchases
•Initiate, lead and provide guidance and recommendations on small plant replacement, improvement and modification projects. Responsible for small capital projects. Budget preparation.
•Perform inspections, generate reports and recommendations in conjunction with maintenance specialists and inspectors to ensure equipment condition assessments are completed and follow up completed.
•Implement Management of Change initiatives, identify small projects and develop scope of work for execution.
•Maintain a technical link with the Discipline Engineers to ensure consistency with all Canadian Natural practice and standards.

Secondary Project Responsibilities:
•Bid package preparation and in the review of the various bids for EPC phase of the project.
•Conceptual design
•Development and review of project design standards and specifications; equipment data sheets; plant layouts
•Ensure construction conforms to the approved Construction Work Package plans and specifications
•Work with EPC’s in the development of all engineering deliverables, EDS and Detailed Engineering related to area of specialty

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:

•A degree in Electrical Engineering with registration as a professional engineer in Alberta or eligibility for registration.
•10+ years experience in an electrical engineering and/or supervisory role in a operational environment working with maintenance or operations in oil sands facilities is preferred.
•Experience working with equipment on heavy oil Upgraders, large oil refining facilities or petrochemical plants; and hands on electrical engineering knowledge with respect to Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems, business communication protocols and process control a definite asset.
•Past experience working through the commissioning and start up of a plant facility.
