Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation. Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

SCOPE: With extensive experience troubleshooting electrical issues, this position plays a key role in the maintainability of the Horizon Oil Sands facility. Viewed as an integral part of this operation, your skills and expertise will be utilized to ensure all parties are supported through open communication and guidance.
KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION: • Reporting to the Electrical Lead, this role will maintain open communication while supporting various groups within specific business areas (Maintenance, Operations and Project). • The Electrical Engineer will participate actively with Engineering Procurement (EP) Contractor(s) in the development of all engineering deliverables, Engineering Design Study {EDS} and Detailed Engineering related to area of specialty (P&ID’s, Control Logic, Electrical Single Lines, Area Classification, Plot Plans, Equipment List & Data Sheets, Fire Protection Requirements, 3 D Model). • Act as the key resource for all electrical issues for the Co-generation Plant of the Utilities area.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: • Development and review of project design standards and specifications; equipment data sheets; plant layouts to ensure maintenance and reliability requirements have been addressed for repairs, plant changes and major equipment purchases. • Support Maintenance and Operations; providing guidance and recommendations during commissioning and start-up, routine operations, plant outages and turnarounds. • Generation of work scopes for maintenance, repairs and modification of plant equipment. • Initiate, lead and provide guidance and recommendations on small plant replacement, improvement and modification projects. Responsible for small capital projects. Budget preparation. • Perform inspections, generate reports and recommendations in conjunction with maintenance specialists and inspectors to ensure equipment condition assessments are completed and follow up completed. • Implement Management of Change initiatives, identify small projects and develop scope of work for execution. • Participate in the bid package preparation and in the review of the various bids for EPC phase of the project. • Maintain a technical link with the Discipline Engineers to ensure consistency with all Canadian Natural practice and standards. • Provide input into all stages of a project from conceptual engineering final design and by reviewing all detailed plans with a view to sequencing of the work properly, resource loading, etc. • Review all bid packages for constructability prior to bids being sent out. Provide advice on the selection of contractor for project. • Ensure all construction conforms to the approved Construction Work Package plans and specifications and that all work is conducted in accordance with permit procedure requirements. • Leads and consults with other personnel plant wide on enabling an efficient problem solving process. • Develop/assist in maintaining and updating plant standards and practices to ensure plant assets are optimally installed, maintained and operated. • Know and apply HOSP standards, practices and core principles, also Industry codes and standards to ensure compliance of our installations. • Is a resource for Functional Groups (Process Engineering) and participates in HAZOP, or like, studies.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION: Education & Experience: • A degree in Electrical Engineering with registration as a professional engineer in Alberta or eligibility for registration • 10+ years experience in an electrical engineering and/or supervisory role in a maintenance or operations environment working in oil sands facilities is preferred. • Experience working with equipment on heavy oil Upgraders, large oil refining facilities or petrochemical plants; and hands on electrical engineering knowledge with respect to Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems, business communication protocols and process control a definite asset. • Co-Generation facility experiences in the following areas: 1. Experience in the commissioning and startup of a Co-Gen facility. 2. Experience in the identification, selection and procurement of electrical equipment for a Co-Gen facility. 3. Experience in the development of plant wiring and loop diagrams within a Co-Gen facility. Experience in trouble-shooting and problem solving of Co-Gen facility electrical equipment issues. • Experience working with design and engineering of electrical distribution systems and equipment including overhead power distribution lines up to 72 kV. • Solid background working with and directing Contractors/Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) firms. • Knowledge of HAZOP (or like) methodologies for Process Hazard Analysis. • Past experience working through the commissioning and start up of a plant including its Co-Gen facility.
