Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation. Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.
This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

SCOPE: • Horizon Oil Sands is a world class integrated oil sands mine and upgrading project achieving first synthetic crude oil production in 2009. • As a young operation, Horizon provides an atmosphere of tremendous future potential where talented mine planners will thrive. • This position is tasked with providing technical leadership to the mine. • Reporting to the Manager, Mine Engineering, this position will ensure optimized Short Range Mine Plans are provided and communicated.
KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION: • Lead a team of engineers and technologists. • Providing short range plans that can be executed in the field and then monitoring compliance to the plan. • Daily interaction with the Mine Operations and Mine Maintenance groups. • Coordinating the integration of the short and long range mine plans.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: • Leading the development, communication and proper execution of the short range plans working with Mine Operations. • Work interactively with Mine Geology to ensure consistent quality control of feed. • Responsible for maintaining accurate survey control and surfaces. • Support the development, implementation and maintenance of the Mine Fleet Management System (dispatch).
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION: Education & Experience: • Degree in Mine Engineering (or possibly civil engineering with a mining background). • 10+ years of experience as a Mine Planning Engineer - preference will be given to those candidates with experience working in an open-pit mining environment. • Eligible for registration with APEGGA. • A proven track record of creating successful mine plans (both short and long term). • Experience working with Mintec’s Minesight or a similar Mining software package. • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
