Horizon Oil Sands, north of Fort McMurray, is an exciting part of our growth. Horizon Oil Sands operations started in February 2005 and after years of planning and construction, the Horizon Oil Sands successfully and sustainably produced its first barrels of high quality, sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) in early 2009. First production of SCO was a major milestone for Canadian Natural and we are very pleased with the success of the project. With Phase 1 production capacity of 110,000 bpd, this is just the first step in value creation.  Looking to the future, our assets support 232,000 – 250,000 barrels per day of light, sweet, crude oil production for over 40 years, with no production declines.

This position is based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Position Summary

SCOPE:
• Offering an exciting opportunity for an Engineer, Advanced Process Control (APC) to be part of a brand new team at Horizon and to put their knowledge and expertise to the test at a plant that just started producing oil! 
• The Engineer, APC will help drive Horizon's applications systems to Advanced Process Control (APC) systems to maximize efficiency and production performance from the Automation systems at the Horizon Oil Sands.

KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Provide regular support in the area of process control and interfacing with the Distributed Control System (DCS);
• Function as a control expert, consulting with process and operations to identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the assigned upgrading process control areas;   
• Contribute to the selection and development of the Advanced Process Control (APC) applications;
• Contribute to the selection and development of the Real Time Optimization (RTO) applications to create the highest level of production performance at Horizon.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Implement and maintain basic, intermediate and advanced level process control strategies;
• Generate ideas for improvement projects, including measurement of benefits and development of project cost/benefit analyses;
• Assist in the simulation, modeling and optimization studies of the units;
• Ensure controls are aligned with plant optimization direction;
• Work closely with end users to train personnel on the effective use of the systems.   

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• A degree in Chemical Engineering combined with 10+ years of Process Control / Advanced Process Control / Applications experience in an oil upgrading and/or refining environment;
• Prior experience working in an oil sands facility is an asset;
• Formalized education and/or practical hands on experience working with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems and plant information systems is essential;
• Prior experience working with process simulation software (eg. Hysys) is preferred;
• Knowledge of PI Historian or similar products beneficial.
